Justus Von Liebig

Justus Von Liebig

Justus von Liebig was a chemist who played with and made many discoveries about the chemicals that make up everything around us. His discoveries helped make chemistry useful in people’s daily lives. He changed the way we understand how plants grow, and what we eat.

There are two introduction videos about him to choose from. The first one is better for younger kids, the second one will appeal to older kids. Feel free to watch one, or both!

You will see three other videos that tell a bit more about Justus von Liebig. Feel free to watch as many of those as you like. Then choose some activities and/or a project.

High school students or any student who wants to dig deeper, continue your study with one of the advanced learning projects.

Kitchen Chemistry

Do you know what food is made of? Here is a quick introduction informed by chemistry. This is one of the things Liebig studied.

Tour the Liebig Museum

NOTE: The video is in German, but you may be able to adjust the subtitles in your browser to translate to English. The images on the video are worth watching even if you cannot understand the language.

The Liebig Museum in Giessen, Germany celebrates the work and life of Justus von Liebig.  You can get a glimpse of the place he worked and taught, the tools he made and used, the experiments he performed, and the discoveries he made.

Project

Meat Extract

The introduction video above tells a story of Justus von Liebig, meat extract, and the beginning of bouillon cubes.

If you have not already, go to the Deeper Dive section and watch the video about The Liebig Meat Extract Company.

Next, watch the video in this project to see a tool and recipe tutorial used for beef extraction in the home in the 1800s.

Then, choose a way to engage with what you have learned.

Make your own beef tea or extract from the instructions in the video. Document the process and end result with pictures, video, or a written description. Upload your documentation to your portfolio.

Share and Cook a Recipe: Beef bouillon, although slightly different, is still widely used today. Can you find some in your kitchen? Try making a recipe using bouillon. Note: not all bouillon today is made from meat. Upload the recipe and documentation of your experience to your portfolio.

Liebig’s Tools

In Justus von Liebig’s time, the study of organic chemistry was challenged by the lack of instruments available. In this video, you will see a tool that Liebig popularized, the Liebig Condenser.

This and the Kaliapparat are tools that were important in chemistry work. Research one or both to find out more about them. How has this tool made a difference in our modern life? What discoveries has it led to?

Then write an essay or choose another way to share your knowledge.
