Slavery in the USA

This learning block represents one week’s work. Aim to watch at least one video and choose at least one activity or project to complete.

There are two videos to choose from about slavery in the USA. The first one may be more appropriate for younger kids, the second one to older kids.  It’s important to remember that this is a very sensitive issue and we must treat the history and the people with respect. In the third video, be prepared to learn about the ways in which the legacy of slavery still affects people today, through systemic racism.

Biography of slavery Project

Now it’s time to dig a little deeper. So many of the stories of enslaved people have been lost because they were not recorded. Fortunately, we do have a few stories preserved. Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass were two enslaved people famous for fighting for freedom and the rights of enslaved and newly freed people in the USA.

Choose one, or the other and spend a little more time reading, or watching videos about the person you’ve chosen. Then, create a biography project about them.

Here is a basic biography template for you to download and fill in.

Use the videos above, the books below, and other research online or through your library to discover more about what it was like for enslaved people before and after emancipation.

Save your written biography for your portfolio.
