Renewable energy

This learning block represents one week’s work. Aim to watch at least one video and choose at least one activity or project to complete.

There are two videos to choose from about Renewable Energy. The first one is better for younger kids, the second one will appeal to older kids. Feel free to watch one, or both!

Make a solar tower

Explore the power of the sun to turn a pinwheel/turbine.

Watch the video above and visit your recycle bin to get building.

You will need:

  • Paper (6″ square)
  • Three clean tin cans
  • Wire (paperclip)
  • Thumb tacks
  • Two heavy books
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Sunny Window

Can you think of locations on earth that would have the right conditions for this type of energy?

create biogas from kitchen scraps

All you need are small water bottles, balloons, and kitchen food scraps to test the power of biodegrading food to produce bio gas.

Try creating a few bottles with different scraps then observe the bottles over the next week. Which type of scrap works the best? Was it stinky?

Watch the video below to see how biogas can be put to work.

Exploring Energy options

Explore the following two websites to see if your area is a good location for solar or wind energy. Ask an adult before you link off to these websites.

Make a Solar Oven

Ready to use the sun to make some tasty snacks? Watch the video above and build a solar oven. Remember to ask an adult for help with any cutting of ingredients for your solar cooked creations.

You will need: cardboard box, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, parr of scissors, glue stick, tape, some construction paper.

What did you decide to cook? Some ideas are nachos, english muffin pizzas, or quesadillas. Can you write a recipe for your creations and share what you did to make the solar oven work?

Awesome work! Take some pictures of your oven and your food creations and add them to your portfolio.
