What Is An Integrated Education?
An integrated education is based first and foremost on the understanding that learning does not, and should not, happen in a vacuum. Relevancy to the learner and a deep connection to the world in which they live is what creates a meaningful learning experience. The six core competencies of an Integrated Education that stand the test of time and that should be the focus of any education are:
- Critical thinking
- Practical skills
- Philosophical reasoning
- Self management
- How to learn
The habits, beliefs and mindset we form within each of the Core Competencies fuel our ability to effectively and efficiently gather knowledge through the Pathways we pursue in an effort to answer the Essential Questions central to the human experience.
Self Direction As Empowerment
For too long, we have turned the education of our children over to a system that does not trust them. We have all existed in an overarching educational framework that assumes ignorance and disengagement from learners.
Omnis Education is changing that, unapologetically.
We trust our learners.
We assume competence, capability, and engagement as a default.
We listen to our learners, first, in identifying what it is they need from an educational standpoint.
Human beings do not learn by being told what to do; we learn through experience and we trust our learners to lead the way on what experiences are relevant to them and the paths they choose to explore.
LEARNING, THE OMNIS WAY
We offer a completely new experience to our learners; one based on trust and intrinsic motivation. We value all of our learners as whole, capable human beings right now, without waiting for them to reach the age of maturity or a certain level of knowledge obtainment. We exemplify this by asking them to grapple with questions essential to the human experience.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS INCLUDE:
- Who am I?
- What does it mean to be successful?
- What is the meaning of life?
- How do I know what is true or right?
- What is my responsibility to others in my community?
- What does it mean to be a global citizen?
- What is our responsibility to the planet?
- What is the universe and where did it come from?
Essential Questions can be answered in a variety of ways and from a variety of viewpoints. Most humans ponder them at some point in their lives and often revisit them repeatedly over time. At Omnis Education, within those Essential Questions exist Pathways of knowledge, specific areas of study, that may help a learner formulate the answer to the Essential Question for themselves.
Exploring individual answers to Essential Questions coupled with habits based on the Core Competencies of an Integrated Education is what makes Learning, The Omnis Way unique and tailor made to every single learner.
THIS IS WHERE THE CONVENTIONAL SYSTEM OF EDUCATION IS FALLING SHORT…
The focus is so heavily on developing the right curriculum or body of content to deliver to students, en masse, that we are neglecting whole person development that will allow learners to integrate what they learn into their lived experiences.
That integration of knowledge is what will allow learners to adapt and grow forward in an ever changing world, even after the particular body of knowledge has become obsolete.
The path forward in education isn’t to ensure that every child can quote the same passage from Shakespeare, understand geometric formulas, or even code in the most recent language…
The path forward is in giving learners space for self exploration and in empowering learners with the intrinsic motivation to develop the skills required to acquire and manipulate any body of knowledge necessary to build forward and effect change as individual contributors in a connected world.
THE SYSTEM WE ARE LEFT WITH IS PREPARING KIDS FOR A WORLD THAT HASN’T EXISTED IN DECADES…
The primary shortcoming of our current system of institutional education is that it was designed for a particular moment in time and it does not address the world that we are living in now, or the one that is emerging before us.
Never was this more evident than in the Spring of 2020, when COVID-19 ground the wheels of the educational establishment to a halt. The failures and limitations of the school system were thrown into the spotlight and people who had never previously considered alternatives started asking, “Is there a better way?”
Today, we find ourselves in a world where public education and most versions of mass schooling are, with the best of intentions, failing the students they have a mandate to serve.
What schools teach and how they teach it has failed to keep pace with the rapidly changing real world needs of humanity. The Millennials and Gen Z have become living examples of the very real struggle those in early adulthood face when it becomes clear that the social compact of the educational system you were raised in simply can’t deliver once you hit the real world. Under the current mass educational systems, the Covid generation seems destined for the same fate.
Rather than trying to “fix” education, we’re at a point in history where reimagining it from the ground up is both possible and the most promising solution.
THE FUNDAMENTAL QUESTION WE MUST FIRST ASK IS: WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF EDUCATION?
The answer to this question must stand the test of time and location, because the world our children will inherit is not static and it is not homogenous.
In a world where any answer is just a Google away, any “curriculum” we develop is outmoded almost the instant that it’s implemented. The most technologically forward facing curriculum delivered to a middle school student today will be laughably antiquated by the time they graduate from high school.
SO, WHAT THEN SHOULD WE BE LEARNING?
The purpose of education is to equip people to exist in the world as it is and provide them the skills and power to change it.
A self-directed model of education is necessitated when we acknowledge differences in individual needs affected by:
- WHEN they are learning
- WHERE they are learning
- WHY they are learning
- With WHOM they are learning
- HOW they are learning
- AND their access to resources
Learning, The Omnis Way is built in such a way that any learner can dig as deeply and widely as they choose to, in pursuit of an education that is relevant to THEM.
AT OMNIS EDUCATION, WE’RE BUILDING THE SCHOOL OF THE FUTURE.
We’re partnering world class subject matter specialists with self directed learners to forge paths as individual and inspiring as the humans crafting them.
We’re creating a framework where subject matter experts can innovate and iterate, free from the shackles of an outmoded system. We’re creating a collaborative educational environment where learning is happening everywhere and learning is happening always. In the real world. For now, and the future.
It’s a philosophy of Integrated Education that transcends time and location, providing a framework within which individuals create learning pathways that meet their needs now, and for the future.
