Computer HACKING

This learning block represents one week’s work. Aim to watch at least one video and choose at least one activity or project to complete.

There are three videos to choose from about Computer Hacking. The first one is better for younger kids, the second two will appeal to older kids. Feel free to watch one, or all!

Please note: Hacking is a controversial topic because computer hackers use their talents for both good and bad outcomes. Some hackers work to disrupt the world using viruses to infect computer systems and create problems for people, businesses, and countries that rely on computing systems. Other hackers use their skills to make the computing world safer. We are going to focus on good hacking and the skills that help you think like a hacker.

Try out computer Programming

Computer hackers have to understand programming.  Explore computer programming through an online game.

Watch this video and then click on the following link to try out the programming game: Write your first computer program.

Remember to ask your adults before you link off to the game.

make a scytale cipher

Hackers are experts at using and understanding codes.

Try out this project to explore one type of code that was used by the ancient Egyptians.  Watch the video to learn how to hide your message.

When you finish making the code share it with your family or friends

Could they figure it out? Do you think they could change a few letters in your message and change the message to be something different?

For this project you will need:

  • toilet roll
  • marker
  • white paper cut into 1cm strips
  • scissors
  • clear tape

Kitchen hackathon

Hackers are people who are experts at computing and solving problems who use their talents for good and bad outcomes. One place that hackers come together to create new ideas and solve problems is at “Hackathons.” Watch this video about “What a hackathon is?” and then you will create your own kithen hackathon ideas.

We are going to test out our hacking skills on a common kitchen recipe – our “Kitchen Hackathon.” How to make a more delicious sandwich? Here are some steps to follow.

Write down what you know:

  • Pick a sandwich you or your family likes to eat.
  • Write out the steps for making that sandwich (this is like the step by step code a computer follows)

Now for the hacking and creativity:

  • Read through your recipe + and Brainstorm – What could do to make the sandwich more delicious? What could you add to make it crunchy or salty? What are you going to change?
  • Using a red marker or colour pencil, mark up your recipe changing or adding in the new steps.
  • Now create a poster of your new “Hacked” sandwich to add to your kitchen recipe book. Share it with your community.
  • Ask the adults in your house if you can make your new creation.

Want to tackle a bigger question than how to make a sandwich more delicious? You can apply the same steps you followed above to engage new ideas: 1) write down what you know, 2) think of what you would like to change, 3) then brainstorm new ideas, 4) share your solutions.

Don’t forget to take a picture of your “hacked” sandwich poster and add it to your portfolio.

Books about Hacking

Computer hackers are experts at computers and their language. The books below are not specifically about computer hacking, but instead they are about the skills and concepts hackers use. These books will help you think like a hacker.

Click on a book to buy it from Amazon. Or, you can ask for them at your local library.
